The Demerara Harbour Bridge, connect the east and west bank of the Demerara
river in Guyana South America. This bridge near the capital Georgetown, is the
only reasonable facility to cross the river.
To allow shipping traffic, the
bridge is provided with a retractable span. It was this serious undertaken part
that urgently needed to be rehabilitated.
Extra attention was required to
the continuation of traffic on the bridge during the works to be carried out.
Hycos was contracted by the Ministry of Finance of Guyana, who were
financially donated by the European Union for this project.
The local
construction company I.E.L. Inc. was subcontracted by Hycos to carry out the
constructional works and exchange of parts as supplied from The Netherlands.
Bridge parts such as guiding rollers and car decks were produced locally,
while hydraulic power-packs, control systems, cabins, winches and generators
were supplied from The Netherlands.
Excellent organisation, co-ordination,
and good team work with the local partner resulted in a perfect job finished one
month ahead of schedule and at customers satisfaction.
